Sump Pumps

  • 3 min read

A sump pump is designed to protect your home (primarily your basement) from water damage. Installed in the lowest part of your basement or crawlspace, a sump pump keeps your home dry and safe from flood water damage. The water flows into a specially constructed sump pit (like a hole in the ground) and is pumped away from the building.

Maintaining Your Sump Pump

Allied plumbers can perform a series of tests to ascertain the overall health of your sump pump. Inspecting your sump pump once a year should be enough, but we do get some variable weather in this part of the world and the Columbia River is an ever-present force of nature. Give us a call if you suspect anything may be wrong with your sump pump or if you require a new one to be installed.

Allied Plumbing and Pumps can help with:

  • Removing dirt, gravel, and other forms of debris from the sump pump and the barrel
  • Disconnecting all outdoor hoses in the winter to eliminate hose freeze
  • Installing a secondary, battery-powered sump pump ready to take over if there is a power outage

What Kind of Pump Do I Need?

There are several kinds of sump pumps to choose from. Upon arrival at your home or business, we can quickly determine which type will best suit your particular needs.

Primary Pumps
Primary pumps come in two styles: submersible style sump pumps sit right down in the pit (hole in the basement floor) and can be completely submerged in the water. Pedestal-style pumps do not sit in the water fully and sit somewhat higher above ground level. They work best with shallow pits.

Combination Sump Pumps
Combination sump pumps are a combination of a primary pump and a battery backup in one package. Combination sump pumps protect your home as they kick in when your primary pump cannot remove enough water or there is a power outage.

Sewage Pumps
Sewage pumps are primarily designed to pump sewage waste from your home to your septic system. Once installed, sewage pumps run automatically.

Sump Pumps Improve Your Indoor Air Quality

If the lower areas under your house have ever flooded or your basement feels damp or smells moldy, you may have an issue that requires a sump pump. As sump pumps draw water away, they also prevent mold and mildew from forming. Mold and mildew can cause a host of health problems that affect your breathing in particular.
